Brisbane welcomed international students on the 3rd of March, 2012 in King George Square in Brisbane City.

Griffith University was one of 65 exhibitors present on the day. Other exhibitors included Translink, Brisbane City Council Library and the Queensland Police.

Current students Yashan Thilakaratne and Jose Martinez were presenting Griffith University on the day.

They were showcasing the different programs and courses available to international students.

Jose said, “There are some similar events in Brisbane, but today all universities come together in one place which is a great opportunity for all international students to find the best place to study.

“Also, it is a good chance for international students to go outside, to socialise and to get to know more about the Australian culture.”

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk was present at the event to thank students for selecting Brisbane as their study destination.

“We want [Brisbane] not just to be a place for your education,” he said.

“We want it to be a place where you will have a great cultural experience, where you will enjoy your community and we hope that you will be a lifelong friend of the city of Brisbane and its people.”

Lord Mayor Quirk had a single message for all international students: Never be afraid to go up and ask somebody a question.

“Whether you are a Lord Mayor of Brisbane or a new student of our city, the only way we can feel comfortable is to ask questions and to learn”, he said.

“Brisbane is the best place to live and to study for international students because it is a very safe environment, it is a friendly and attractive city.”
